pH is the abbreviation for potential hydrogen. The pH of any solution is the measure of its hydrogen-ion concentration. The higher the pH reading, the more alkaline and oxygen rich the fluid is in the body. The lower the pH reading, the more acidic and oxygen deprived the fluid is in the body.
If you have a health problem, most likely you are acidic. If your body's pH is not balanced, you cannot effectively assimilate vitamins, minerals and food. Balancing the pH is a major step toward well-being. An acidic pH can occur from an acid forming diet, emotional stress, toxic overload and/or immune reactions.
Acid-forming food examples are meat, fish, poultry, eggs, most dairy, most grains and legumes, refined sugars, drugs and food chemicals.
Alkaline-producing food examples are fruits, vegetables, sprouts and herbs.
On a pH scale of 1-12, plain water is neutral at pH 7. In order to function properly, blood plasma must remain slightly alkaline between 7.35-7.45. Although it is possible to over alkalize the blood, it is a rare occurrence. A far more common problem, especially on modern Western diets, is excess acidification of the blood, which results in a condition known as "acidosis".
Acidosis is responsible for or contributes to a number of debilitating conditions, including demineralization of the bones (osteoporosis), nervous disorders, kidney stones, chronic fatigue, gout, arthritis, dental caries and impaired immune function (Complete Book of Chinese Health and Healing). This is very important to understand because a person can control their pH through proper nutrition.
Here at Back N' Balance we test saliva pH levels on new patients and existing patients. Re-balancing the pH levels through proper nutrition, supplementation, chiropractic care and massage is a goal here for total patient care. By taking care of the body as a whole being and not just pieces, the patient receives a more effective treatment and is on his way to being back in balance!
